Why your message isn’t connecting with your audience
In our years working with committed, socially responsible organizations and brands, we often hear the same challenge: they have an impactful mission but struggle to craft meaningful messages that connect with their audience.
This disconnect isn’t from a lack of effort, purpose, or creativity. It’s a result of communication gaps.
At its core, effective communication is an invitation to connect your audience to your purpose and values while fostering understanding and trust.
It’s what every impact-driven organization sets out to do. But not everyone can connect the dots in communication that ultimately creates a strong relationship between their brand and its audience. So, what’s missing?
01You haven’t identified what your audience actually needs and what motivates them
There’s no discounting the value of your organization and its impact. But communicating with your audience and highlighting why it matters to them encourages genuine engagement. Consider these steps when deepening your connection with your audience:
- Pinpoint where your audience first engaged with your content and took a deliberate action.
- Revisit your brand mission and the need your organization exists to meet.
- Communicate how your organization's information and resources support your audience.
Understanding the core of who your audience is and their motivations isn’t just a wise decision; it creates a ripple effect by inspiring more opportunities for connection that benefit both your audience and your communications strategy. This knowledge informs what you share, how it’s received, and how many connective touchpoints you can create.
02Your audience can’t picture themselves in the story
As a social impact organization, you’ve done the groundwork of identifying the impact you want to have and the new story you want to emerge from your work. That work will likely affect or be influenced by your audience. But can they see themselves in that story? Do they have a say in how it’s being told?
Much of a message’s relevance will depend on your ability to incorporate your audience's real, authentic perspectives and experiences. It isn’t enough to simply tell them what your plans are or how impactful your organization is. Even the best intentions can fall short if your audience doesn't see themselves as the author of their own story. When readers aren’t positioned as the authors of their own stories, it's easy to unintentionally exclude their truths, making it harder for them to see themselves in them.
Ask your audience what makes them feel like part of your vision and listen to their response. Reviews, focus groups, or listening sessions — no matter the method, the answers you get will inform your strategy, grow your connection, and remind you of what your messages are rooted in.
03Your message doesn’t inspire trust
Arguably more than any other organization, as a socially responsible brand, you have to keep trust at the heart of your message. The people who’ve connected with you feel resonance with your mission, vision, and impact. They trust you to deliver on your message and to do so in ways they respect.
Creating trust with your audience is accomplished by providing consistent, clear messages and following through on your word. Every interaction with them should reinforce what they already know about you and be easy to understand.
Think back to what you know about foundational principles like brand voice: when it’s intentionally woven into your messaging, it has the power to illuminate your values, aid in brand recognition, and give your content a clear North Star to follow. The more reliable your brand messaging is, the more likely it will inspire confidence and engagement in your audience.
Disconnected messaging is a challenge many organizations face. But the way it appears within your brand and the path to resolving it are shaped by your unique values, mission, and audience. Building a message that resonates requires a thoughtful strategy rooted in what sets your organization apart and the people you serve.
